The Dayton Fire Department, in partnership with Mayor Jeffrey J. Mims and the Dayton City Commission, has launched Senior Safe, a program aimed at supporting and protecting senior citizens in Dayton. The initiative focuses on providing regular wellness calls, safety checks, and home visits for seniors, especially those who live alone or have limited mobility.
Senior Safe is designed to help address risks such as medical emergencies, social isolation, and environmental hazards that can affect older residents. Trained personnel from the Fire Department will contact enrolled seniors by phone or text to check on their well-being. The program also includes services like in-home fall-risk assessments, installation of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, medication reminders, and updates about weather or city information.
“Senior Safe is about dignity, connection, and prevention,” said Mayor Mims. “No senior in our city should ever feel forgotten. Through simple, consistent outreach, we’re ensuring their safety and peace of mind—while strengthening the bonds that make our city a community.”
Dayton Fire Chief Mike Rice added: "This isn’t just a safety net—it’s a lifeline. We’re proud to bring ongoing reassurance and an enhanced sense of community to our seniors.”
To increase awareness of the program, Fire Department staff will reach out to local community centers, churches, and organizations. Family members are encouraged to enroll elderly loved ones in Senior Safe by visiting the department's website or calling 937-333-5555.
