Congressman Mike Turner and Congresswoman Teresa Leger Fernandez, co-chairs of the Historic Preservation Caucus, have introduced bipartisan legislation to reauthorize the Historic Preservation Fund (HPF), which expired in 2023. The proposed legislation aims to extend the HPF for another decade, ensuring ongoing federal support for preserving historically significant sites nationwide.
"The Historic Preservation Fund has been a cornerstone of protecting America’s heritage," stated Congressman Turner. "This legislation will reauthorize the critical funding that supports preservation projects both here in the Miami Valley and across the nation."
Congresswoman Leger Fernández emphasized the importance of understanding America's history: "We must continue and expand the Historic Preservation Fund’s work so we can better tell these American stories, support rural economies, and facilitate responsible development."
Congressman Mike Carey highlighted how historic preservation aids community culture and economic growth: "Historic preservation projects...are helping to alleviate housing shortages and boost economic growth." He expressed pride in reintroducing this bipartisan legislation.
Congresswoman Sarah Elfreth noted her district's rich historical significance: "Each of our districts has played a distinct and critical role in the fabric of our nation."
The HPF was established in 1976, funded by U.S. offshore drilling royalties. It supports various federal preservation projects, including Save America’s Treasures. This initiative has aided several projects over 25 years.
In 1998, Save America’s Treasures was established under President Bill Clinton to preserve historic buildings and arts through a public-private partnership with multiple organizations. Over time, significant projects like those involving Wright Flyer III have benefited from this fund.
Legislation related to historic preservation has seen continued support over decades, with notable acts passed under different administrations ensuring ongoing funding for these efforts.
