Today, Congressman Mike Turner issued a statement regarding Representative Gerry Connolly's decision not to seek reelection to the U.S. House of Representatives. Turner acknowledged Connolly's extensive career and contribution as a public servant for more than three decades.
Turner highlighted, "Gerry Connolly is a dear friend and dedicated public servant who has spent more than 30 years serving our nation." He mentioned the bond developed over the past ten years with Connolly through their joint work as members of the U.S. delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.
Connolly's leadership as President of NATO-PA was noted, especially during the period of Russia's incursion into Ukraine in February 2022. Turner remarked, "As President of NATO-PA, Gerry led with strength and dignity during one of the most challenging moments in recent history." He also credited Connolly's efforts in advocating for a Centre for Democratic Resilience at NATO headquarters, emphasizing its role in reinforcing democratic institutions among NATO member countries and partners.
Turner lauded Connolly's relentless commitment to democracy, stating, "His unwavering commitment to upholding democracy against authoritarianism should be applauded." Reflecting on his career, Turner also stated, "Gerry has had a stellar career serving the people of Virginia’s 11th district." He offered his prayers for Connolly's health as he faces disease-related challenges.
