Congressman Mike Turner shared an op-ed in the Dayton Daily News to commemorate the Dayton Dragons' 25th season. Reflecting on his time as Mayor of Dayton, he detailed how local efforts alongside his leadership helped establish the Minor League franchise in the city.
Turner highlighted the impact of the Dayton Dragons on the community, celebrating its transformation into a hub of culture and economic opportunity. "The Dragons have played a central role in that transformation, proving that baseball can be more than just a game – it can be a driving force for positive change." He noted that the team has achieved a record-breaking streak, selling out 1,573 consecutive home games.
The journey to bring the Dragons to Dayton faced multiple obstacles, with several unsuccessful attempts and proposals that put unnecessary risks on taxpayers. Turner recounted that Mandalay Sports Entertainment's arrival marked a turning point, offering a collaborative deal where the city would own and lease the stadium while the team would cover construction and operational costs. Mandalay agreed, setting Dayton's deal apart by coming in on-budget.
Turner acknowledged Bob Murphy, the team's President and General Manager, as a key figure in the team's success, stating, "For the 25 years of the Dayton Dragons’ success, there has been one leader that has delivered for our community: the President and General Manager for the team, Bob Murphy."
On opening day 25 seasons ago, Turner and many local leaders expressed their gratitude to Murphy for fulfilling his promise to establish the Dayton Dragons in the downtown area. Turner concluded his op-ed by expressing pride in his role and the significant contribution of the Dragons to the community.
