Today, Congressman Mike Turner announced a collaborative project between the Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training (ADST) and the Library of Congress to collect oral history accounts during Dayton 2025. This initiative aims to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Dayton Peace Accords, which ended the conflict in the Balkans. Interviews will be conducted at the Roger Glass Performing Arts Center at the University of Dayton throughout the Spring Session.

Congressman Turner emphasized the importance of preserving diplomatic lessons through this project: “Collecting oral histories to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Dayton Peace Accords is essential to preserving the lessons of diplomacy and conflict resolution.” He noted that this effort highlights how pivotal these accords were in bringing peace to the Balkans.

Susan R. Johnson, President of ADST, stated, “Oral histories capture the backstory of American diplomatic history that official accounts miss.” She highlighted their value as primary sources for various audiences and expressed honor in collaborating with Congressman Turner on documenting efforts surrounding Dayton negotiations.

Eric G. Nelson, former U.S. Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina, remarked on ADST's projects: “A project around the Dayton Peace Accords is a wonderful opportunity to learn from history.” He noted that these accords allowed Bosnia and Herzegovina an opportunity for rebuilding.

Fran Leskovar, Manager of Dayton Peace Accords Oral History Project, quoted Winston Churchill: “Study history. In history lie all secrets of statecraft,” underscoring how understanding these accords equips future leaders in managing conflicts effectively.

The collected interviews will contribute to an interactive website anthology by November 2025 titled "30thAnniversaryoftheDaytonPeaceAccords:TheArtofthe(Im)Possible." This resource will offer open access to narratives about DPA negotiations and implementation.

Congressman Turner plans to record his own oral history account reflecting on his role as Mayor during those negotiations.

ADST was founded in 1986 as a non-partisan educational organization promoting understanding of U.S. diplomacy by sharing experiences from America's diplomatic practitioners. It holds a vast collection praised by foreign affairs experts across political lines.
