Congressman Mike Turner (OH-10) has written an op-ed in the Dayton Daily News on the third anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. In his piece, Turner argues that the conflict is a fight between authoritarianism and democracy.

"Today, Ukraine continues to stand strong, defying the odds and demonstrating the power of a nation united in its pursuit of freedom and sovereignty," Turner writes. He emphasizes that this conflict represents a battle between authoritarianism and democracy, insisting that "democracy must prevail."

Turner recalls the initial shock when Russian President Vladimir Putin launched an invasion of Ukraine three years ago. Despite predictions that Kyiv would fall quickly, Ukrainians have resisted Russian aggression. Turner notes his multiple visits to Ukraine since the war began, observing firsthand the stakes involved and highlighting American leadership's importance.

He recently led a U.S. House delegation to the Munich Security Conference and NATO Parliamentary Assembly Joint Committee Meeting in Brussels. During these meetings with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy and NATO Secretary General Rutte, it was stressed that "this war is not just about Ukraine – it is about the future of global security, the strength of NATO, and the resolve of the free world in the face of authoritarian aggression."

Turner highlights the human cost of the conflict, noting that hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians have died. He points out that Russia's military capabilities are bolstered by soldiers from North Korea and warns against underestimating Putin's determination to continue his campaign.

He urges Congress to maintain military support for Ukraine, warning that if Putin succeeds there, he poses a threat to NATO allies across Europe.

In May 2025, Dayton will host over 1,000 attendees for the NATO Parliamentary Assembly Spring Session. This event coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Dayton Peace Accords. Turner views this as an opportunity for NATO allies to reaffirm their commitment to democracy.

"Just as we were diligent in achieving lasting peace for the Balkans," he writes, "we must be equally steadfast in our commitment to protecting democracy in Ukraine." He concludes by stating that "the world is watching," urging decisive action for Ukraine, NATO, and global security.
