The City of Dayton has been informed by St. Vincent de Paul that the organization will cease operations at the Gateway Homeless Shelter for Men on June 30, 2025. The shelter is located at 1921 S. Gettysburg Ave.

Dayton Mayor Jeffrey Mims, Jr. expressed his disappointment over this decision, stating, "I am deeply disappointed with St. Vincent de Paul’s decision to no longer operate at the Gateway Homeless Shelter for Men." He assured that the city would collaborate with partners to ensure a smooth transition and continued services for those relying on the shelter. "Our commitment to supporting vulnerable populations remains steadfast," he added.

In recent months, Dayton has worked with Montgomery County and St. Vincent de Paul leadership to find ways to prevent this outcome. Despite these efforts, funding from both the City and County has remained consistent, with Dayton contributing over $3 million in emergency shelter grants and an additional $3 million from federal COVID relief funds between 2016 and 2024. The city also proposed bringing in independent consultants to evaluate funding structures and explore alternatives.

"The City of Dayton is unwavering in its commitment to providing emergency shelter services 24/7, 365 days a year," said Shelley Dickstein, Dayton City Manager. She emphasized collaboration with Montgomery County and other entities to maintain uninterrupted services during the transition period at the Gateway Homeless Shelter for Men while noting that services at the Women and Families Shelter will remain unchanged.

The property housing the Gateway Homeless Shelter for Men is owned by the City of Dayton and leased to County Corp since 2009, which subleases it to St. Vincent de Paul for operations. This leasing setup will persist under a new provider selected through an open Request for Proposals (RFP) process.
