House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence Chairman Mike Turner participated in a virtual discussion hosted by the Atlantic Council. The event, titled "Elections 2024: Congressman Mike Turner on geopolitics and the next U.S. president," featured a conversation between Turner and Frederick Kempe, President and CEO of the Atlantic Council.
The discussion covered several pressing geopolitical issues. Chairman Turner identified China as the United States' most significant threat, while labeling Russia, Iran, and North Korea as an immediate threat collectively known as the Axis of Evil. Specific topics included Russia's nuclear ambitions in space and the presence of North Korean troops in Russia.
Turner expressed concerns about North Korean military involvement in Europe: “North Korean troops do not belong in Europe attacking another European nation, and I think it is in NATO’s interests and certainly the United States’ interests as a member of NATO that North Korean troops should not be marching into a European country and attacking it.”
He also used an analogy to discuss nuclear weapons: “I use this analogy frequently. So, I’ve got a 1964 Cadillac... If you think of that as a nuclear weapon... Well, our adversaries have continued to build new and more modern nuclear weapons while we’ve kept our old ones.”
Frederick Kempe highlighted the importance of such discussions ahead of upcoming elections: “In the lead up to next week’s presidential and congressional elections, this series has worked to promote high-level, substantive conversations on the impact that this election will have on U.S. foreign policy.”
