Congressman Mike Turner (OH-10) is leading the effort to secure funding for the Boys & Girls Club of Dayton's West Dayton Community Recreation & Space Sharing Project. The House Appropriations Committee's version of the FY24 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies funding legislation includes $1.4 million in congressional Community Project Funding for the project.

At a recent press conference held at the Boys & Girls Club of Dayton, Congressman Turner expressed his support for the organization and the impact it has on the community. He highlighted his personal connection to the club, stating, "I know the importance of their programming, having been an after-school student that went to the Boys & Girls Club in East Dayton when they had a facility there." Congressman Turner recognizes the significant role the club plays in the lives of young people and expressed gratitude to Crystal Allen, CEO of the BGCD, for the work being done.

Dr. Karen Townsend, Chair of the BGCD's Board of Directors, also spoke at the press conference, acknowledging Congressman Turner's commitment to the community and the youth of the Boys & Girls Club. She emphasized the significance of the funding, stating, "This gift is not just dollars – it's an investment in the future to prepare our children to be workforce-ready and give them a space to learn and grow." Dr. Townsend sees the project as an opportunity for children to come together, learn technical and life skills, and be mentored in a facility that is more than just a building but a pathway to the future.

The Boys & Girls Club of Dayton has been providing a safe and encouraging environment for young people aged 6 to 18 for over 60 years. The organization offers daily after-school and summer programs that help children learn and grow.

Congressman Turner's dedication to securing funding for the BGCD's West Dayton Community Recreation & Space Sharing Project has been ongoing. In April 2023, he submitted a funding request to the House Appropriations Committee, which has now included $1.4 million in Community Project Funding for the project in the Fiscal Year 2024 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Bill. The legislation was approved by the House Appropriations Committee in July and is awaiting full consideration on the House Floor.

The Boys & Girls Club of Dayton is grateful for Congressman Turner's support and his efforts to bring this funding to completion. With the funds, the BGCD will be able to remodel its West Stewart Street facility and make necessary equipment upgrades, further enhancing the programs and services it offers to the community.

Congressman Turner's advocacy for the Boys & Girls Club of Dayton demonstrates his commitment to the youth and the future of the community. Through his efforts, the organization will continue to provide a nurturing and empowering environment for young people, equipping them with the skills and support they need to thrive.
