The Oakwood Historical Society, along with Oakwood City Officials, will conduct an unveiling ceremony of Oakwood’s first historical marker at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 14 in front of the Oakwood City Building, 30 Park Avenue, Oakwood.

The first historical marker commemorates the 150th anniversary of when the first Oakwood homes were built in an area near the Oakwood City Building on 30 Park Avenue in 1872, and the four men who first envisioned a “Town of Oakwood.”

“What an honor to have a historical marker commemorating the beginning of our wonderful community,” said Mayor Bill Duncan.  “Thank you to the members of The Oakwood Historical Society for helping to preserve the city’s history.”

Festivities will immediately follow the unveiling, including free docent-led historical walking tours of the original “town” featuring the early homes and residents of Oakwood. Newly revised tour booklets will be available for only $5.

Wright Memorial Library will be on hand with their Book Peddler, filled with books on Oakwood and Dayton history topics — celebrating Oakwood’s first public library building across from the City Building — the site of Oakwood’s soon-to-be installed second historical marker.

Graeter’s Ice Cream and Park Avenue shops will join in the festivities by offering specials on refreshments and displays of Oakwood-related merchandise.

“The Historical Marker Program has been in the planning stages for over two years,” said Debra Edwards, President of The Oakwood Historical Society. “We are grateful for the wide community support of this program. We are especially indebted to John and MJ Gray who generously sponsored this first marker. We also thank the City of Oakwood for their partnership in this project since its inception, Oakwood resident Dan Turben for donating the plaque that will be placed at a future date on the site of the first public library, and the Oakwood Rotary Club for agreeing to fund several of our future historical markers and for their contribution to this May event.”
