Congressman Mike Turner has announced that Central State University (CSU) in Ohio will receive over $11.2 million from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in Employee Retention Credit (ERC) funds. CSU, along with Wilberforce University, is one of two historically black colleges and universities in the state.

Congressman Turner played a crucial role in advocating for CSU with the IRS, resulting in the university receiving three installments of ERC refund checks. The first quarter of 2021 will bring CSU $3,347,610.90, followed by $3,954,128.73 for the second quarter, and $3,966,382.39 for the third quarter.

In response to this achievement, Congressman Turner stated, "Supporting institutions like Central State University is critical to unlocking the full potential of the Dayton region, and I am pleased to have been able to help CSU secure this monumental tax refund from the IRS." He also emphasized the importance of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in providing educational opportunities and fostering innovation in communities.

Dr. Alex Johnson, Interim President of Central State University, expressed gratitude for Congressman Turner's dedication to partnering with HBCUs and helping secure the necessary resources to maintain robust educational programs. He said, "By working with Congressman Turner to process our Employee Retention Credit claim, we have been able to secure funds that permit us to build upon the great strides we have made in elevating the student experience through improved operations, infrastructure, and innovative programs."

Jacqueline Y. Gamblin, Chair of the Board of Trustees at Central State University, also acknowledged the significant role HBCUs play in the educational ecosystem. She thanked Congressman Turner for his assistance in securing over $11 million for the university through the Employee Retention Tax Credit. Gamblin expressed excitement about continuing to work with Turner to strengthen CSU's position as a leader among these esteemed institutions.

The Employee Retention Credit (ERC) is a refundable tax credit designed to support eligible businesses and tax-exempt organizations that were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. It is available to employers that paid qualified wages to employees between March 12, 2020, and January 1, 2022. The credit amount and eligibility criteria vary depending on the timing of the business impacts.

This significant financial boost will enable Central State University to further its mission of educational innovation and excellence. With the support of Congressman Turner and the ERC funds, CSU will continue to create new pathways and opportunities for students, ensuring a bright future for the university and its community.
