Congressman Mike Turner (OH-10) has secured $2 million in federal funding for the Behavioral Health Crisis Center at Dayton Children’s Hospital. The funding, included in the House Appropriations Committee’s version of the FY24 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies funding legislation, will be used to construct a new facility aimed at increasing mental health services for young children in need of care.

During a press conference held at Dayton Children’s Hospital, Congressman Turner expressed his pride in bringing federal support for the mental health project. He commended Deborah Feldman, President & CEO of Dayton Children’s, for her efforts in addressing the growing mental health crisis. Congressman Turner stated, “I am very glad that in the request that they have put forward, I have been able to secure the first step in getting a $2 million grant for this facility. I look forward to this project coming to fruition.”

Deborah Feldman highlighted the hospital’s strategic plan to tackle the mental health crisis, which includes early intervention, prevention, outpatient services, acute care services, and crisis management. She emphasized the importance of the new building in expanding their inpatient services and creating an outpatient component. Feldman expressed gratitude to Congressman Turner, stating, “We could not have a stronger advocate or friend in Washington and here in Dayton.”

The new facility, spanning 113,000 square feet, will not only provide essential mental health care but will also have a positive impact on the local economy. It is expected to generate 175 construction jobs over nearly two years and will create 159 new permanent jobs for the region once it opens in early 2025. Additionally, the facility will serve as a regional training site for students pursuing behavioral health credentials from at least 20 Ohio counties.

Dayton Children’s Hospital has been a pillar of pediatric care in Southwest Ohio for over 50 years. Congressman Turner has taken the lead in securing federal funding for the hospital and is the primary sponsor of their request for funds.

The funding secured by Congressman Turner demonstrates the commitment to addressing the mental health crisis among young children in need of care. With the construction of the new facility, Dayton Children’s Hospital will be better equipped to provide crucial mental health services to those who need it most.
