Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park issued the following announcement on Nov. 7.
Who doesn’t love a comeback story? The mighty bison is the original comeback kid!
Bison have roamed North America since prehistoric times, but by the late 1800s, they were close to extinction. Fewer than 1,000 wild bison remained. Their near extinction greatly impacted the ecological health of the prairie lands, and also the Native American tribes who used them for food, clothes, and other material goods. In 1872, the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) began to protect and preserve the herd of two dozen bison living in Yellowstone National Park. It has taken almost 150 years of hard work, but there are now approximately 10,000 bison on DOI lands and around 500,000 in the whole country! On May 9, 2016 the bison officially became the national mammal of the United States of America. Happy National Bison Day!
