Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park issued the following announcement on Oct 29.
In addition to flying around the Statue of Liberty while he was in New York for the Hudson-Fulton Celebration, Wilbur Wright also flew from Governors Island to Grant’s Tomb. Glenn Curtiss, the Wrights’ main competitor, was actually supposed to make this journey, but his aircraft couldn’t handle the winds. Wilbur completed the 20-mile journey in 33 minutes with a canoe strapped below the Flyer in case of a water landing. Take that, Curtiss!
